"Vixen" - Estella Dawn | Review

Estella, New Zealand born, US based songwriter, singer, multi-instrumentalist and producer. As a working musician, she writes and records her vocals and piano as well as co-producing all aspects of her music. Estella sings with the melodic command, subtlety and range that spans genres. She's been compared to the likes of, Adele, Billie Eilish, Pink and Hayley Williams to name a few. These well crafted songs contain multiple layers, both vocally and musically, subtle and soothing when needed and sharp and gritty when desired.

“I make the rules, don’t break them”, Estella Dawn commands in her newest single “Vixen”. The sound of her voice especially with the background vocals feels like an ode to Nicole Scherzinger and The Pussy Cat Dolls. She’s got a low-howling voice that rolls out some seriously impressive notes. It’s not unlike Pink or Christina Aguilera but with clear influences of today from Billie Eilish and every individual Instagram-worthy caption lyric is like that of Taylor Swift.

The song is masterful in its presentation of Estella’s power. There’s no hint of apprehension behind what she’s saying, there’s no instance where her confidence comes into question. The lyrics lay the rules on the line, the rules that she makes. It’s a frank conversation with her partner about this is the way that it is and she’s not taking any questions. It’s intense and honestly, reassuring to hear such unwavering confidence. It’s assertive and self-assured. I think anyone holding back from saying something to their partner could benefit from a listen to this.
