Rising indie-pop artist and songwriter Lila Holler returns with her most vulnerable release to date, “The Way I Am Now,” arriving October 17.
Written during a period of personal struggle, the track finds Lila balancing themes of self-care, insecurity, and intimacy within a serious relationship. “I wrote this song while in the midst of dealing with some mental health issues last year,” Lila shares. “Being in a serious relationship, I had to learn how to balance taking care of myself and showing up with my 50%. It’s a song laced with insecurities, written in the hopes that people who deal with the same struggles feel less alone.”
Haunting yet tender, “The Way I Am Now” feels like a spiral of thoughts unraveling in real time. Its stillness carries weight—an atmosphere meant to be absorbed in solitude, eyes closed, on top of a bed. Lila’s emotive delivery grounds the track in raw honesty, creating a space for listeners to sink into their own quiet reflections.
The songwriting process was equally cathartic and challenging. Composed alone in her bedroom, the song poured out in near-chronological order as she sat with a guitar in alternate tuning. The result is both delicate and powerful, anchored by the striking chorus: “Tell me you’d take me without knowing I’ll ever change from the way I am now.” For Lila, this lyric encapsulates the heart of the song—the plea for unconditional acceptance in love. As with all her work, the single highlights Lila’s commitment to creating music that is both deeply personal and universally resonant.
“The Way I Am Now” will be available on all streaming platforms October 17.
