With her foot on the gas and no rearview mirror in sight, Alex Ray drops her sleekest, most provocative track to date with “DRIVERS SIDE,” out September 12. Seductive, savage, and cinematic, the song blurs the line between lust and control, soundtracking secret rendezvous and spiraling obsession with pulsing alt-pop production and icy, high-gloss vocals.
Written in collaboration with Syd Tagle (also known as DADĒ) and co-writer and producer John Sinclair, “DRIVERS SIDE” marks the early creative spark behind Ray’s upcoming EP. Built around late-night parking lot hookups and high-stakes attraction, the track is rooted in memory and fantasy — a snapshot of being 21, reckless, and addicted to the adrenaline of a love that should’ve never happened.
The songwriting flips the power dynamic, casting the narrator as confident, untouchable, and in control — until the bridge reveals the truth: it's all an act, and the feelings run much deeper. The track’s standout lyric, “You can try, and tell me ‘last time,’ with your hands in my jeans from the driver’s side,” captures the paradox at the heart of the song — defiance wrapped in desire.
Ray wrote the song as a flashback to a time when she fell hard, fast, and disastrously. “When I was 21, I fell in love with someone who was engaged,” she shares. “I wasn't proud of it, but I felt like I had this power. I became this sexy, confident, ‘other woman’ version of myself — but underneath, I was unraveling. I was scared he'd change his mind, scared of being disposable. ‘DRIVERS SIDE’ is about pretending you're in control while quietly losing it.” It’s sexy, dangerous, and heartbreakingly honest — a twisted love song that lives somewhere between confession and performance.
With a hypnotic beat and razor-sharp lyrics, “DRIVERS SIDE” is a late-night anthem for anyone who’s ever played with fire and smiled through the burn.
