Finally, some pop that transcends decades! I love it when I can hear a song and think, ‘Oh that totally reminds me of the 2000s but it’s also playing with new and fresh ideas and applications.
The initial falsetto is so beautiful and really pulls the listener into this song. With incredible storytelling and an addicting voice, Scott creates a fun pop track that feels new. This is a song I instantly started to sway too and as I was listening with friends, they immediately felt a good energy too.
A departure from his usual covers, "Tough Love" marks the official debut of V N SCOTT's original music. The song was written under the mentorship of Grammy-winning songwriter/producer, Mike Elizondo (Ed Sheeran, Jonas Brothers, Maroon 5) of WBR, and the track was co-produced by V N SCOTT and Byram (T-Minus, Skizzy Mars, Snoh Aalegra).
"Tough Love" is currently a Finalist in the Unsigned Only Music Competition (produced by the International Songwriting Competition) in the Vocal Performance category. It was also a semi-finalist in the Pop/Top 40 category. The Grand Prize winner will be announced in early September.
Scott Oatley aka V N SCOTT is a professional singer and songwriter from Thousand Oaks, California. His first foray into the music industry began at Capitol Records in 2008 with the recording sessions for Disney's "High School Musical 3" soundtrack. Since then, without even realizing it, the world has enjoyed Scott's voice on a wide range of blockbuster films such as "La La Land," "Jurassic World," and "SING."
While much of his session work has taken place in the background, Scott is no stranger to being front and center. He has been a featured singer on television, including an episode of ABC's "Black-ish," and has spent the last few years performing as a member of his alt pop duo, Lord & Lady. Scott's arrangement of the group's "La La Land Medley" went viral on YouTube, amassing over 5 million views and over 12,000 subscribers. Beyond its initial online success, the song was also heard on the global stage at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympic games during Kristina Astakhova and Alexey Rogonov's pairs free skate. Lord & Lady's original song, "A Little Longer," won them Best Group/Duo for the 12th Annual International Acoustic Music Awards, and their last single, "The Lift," was a semi-finalist in the AC category of the 2018 International Songwriting Competition.
Donning the name "Van" from his Dutch mother's side, Scott is embarking on a new solo career with a fistful of singles, having spent the last year intensely writing and working to find his own unique voice and sound. His debut single "Tough Love" was written under the mentorship of Mike Elizondo (Ed Sheeran, Jonas Brothers, Maroon 5), formerly of WBR. The track was also co-produced by V N SCOTT and Byram (T-Minus, Skizzy Mars, Snoh Aalegra). While his dramatic vocals have often been likened to Freddie Mercury, his songwriting style is even more of an alluring enigma that lives in the modern age, but points back to classic artists of the past.
