No exaggeration, this is one of the best music videos I’ve seen in a long time. It starts off comically with her gesturing/swiping left and right on different guys’ portraits, a primitive version of Tinder and other dating apps. All of the potential suitors attempt to sway her in ridiculous fashion, mimicking the treacherous world of online dating – or, per the song title, “modern love.” My favorite scene is when they’re all dancing around, using dance moves that definitely would’ve violated decorum in the time period of the video. I also really enjoyed the scene when the last two suitors are dueling over the protagonist as she comes outside to scold them, but one of them ends up shooting the other. Thankfully, and quite romantically, the main character gets a happy ending with the man she really loves, convincing watchers that in a world filled with other ways of finding romance, real, human connection is always the best.
I have absolutely no problems with this video. It’s the perfect length, follows an entertaining plot, and it goes perfectly with the song. With artists churning out so many music videos with no plotline and little connection to their song, it’s super refreshing to see this video from Picture This. I enjoyed every single moment of this video and I hope more people become aware of it as time goes on.
Picture This was the best selling Irish act in 2017 and 2018, selling out a stadium tour in their home country along with performing at venues such as SSE Arena Belfast and O2 Shepard’s Bush London. Their self-titled debut album did very well, remaining on Ireland’s top charts for 7 weeks and was certified triple platinum.
