"Counting Flowers" - EVER | Review

Alt-Pop songstress EVER unveils her harmonious new single ‘Counting Flowers’, due for release on the 18th of September via Yada Yada Records. Serving as her first release since her debut EP, ‘Counting Flowers’ sees EVER return with a newly found lyrical maturity that’s utterly spellbinding.

After initially turning heads last year with her debut track ‘Bloom’, her subsequent singles saw EVER venture further into alt-pop territory in an organic and effortless way. With lyricism that’s easily accessible yet born from a place of authenticity; it’s not hard to understand why, even in the relative infancy of her career, EVER‘s music has already struck a chord with so many.

Speaking on ‘Counting Flowers’, EVER explains:

‘“Counting Flowers is very much inspired by the role reversal that takes place when loved ones get older. The lyrics narrate the relationship I’ve had with my Grandmother, who’s always been a strong female figure in my life. She nurtured me from a baby, right through adulthood. I have been shaped by her values and unconditional love. This song is a love letter to her”.

The release of ‘Counting Flowers’ marks the start of a new chapter for EVER. Although the track is more mellow than much of her discography, through the unique combination of her engrossing vocals and spirited production, her music remains just as enchanting and energizing. On ‘Counting Flowers’, EVER once again works with long-time collaborator Scott Verrill (better known as alt-pop artist kwassa), who’s recently worked with the likes of Greyson Chance and Charlotte Clark.

EVER’s debut EP entitled Golden Hour, which includes singles as such as ‘Close’ and ‘Indigo Sky’, saw her accumulate in excess of 400k streams, gaining global editorial support from Spotify, which saw her included on a number of notable playlists including New Pop Revolution, New Music Friday UK, Fresh Finds and Pop Right Now. EVER’s distinct knack of crafting delightfully welcoming alt-pop also caught the eye of ITV’s Love Island, who placed every single track off the EP on the latest series of the show.

On top of all of that, EVER garnered support from the likes of BBC Introducing, Amazing Radio, tmrw Magazine, Euphoria Magazine and others. Even though her sound continually develops and evolves, her sensational songwriting and alluring vocals still remain firmly at the core of EVER’s music. Partly due to her frank lyricism, EVER’s music is unceasingly comforting while still proving to be refreshingly innovative.

While EVER – real name Louise Smith – cites the likes of LANY, Tracy Chapman and Emily King as inspirations, it’s evident that she’s not trying to emulate anyone. Her distinct sound, which almost defiantly refuses to be tied down to a single genre, appeals to fans of a multitude of different styles, but also proves to be instantly alluring to anyone who adores heartfelt lyricism and astonishingly atmospheric production.

EVER is currently working on new music, with a series of new singles on the horizon.
