“Cliffs” - Ezra Jordan | Artist Take

This new electro-pop single is Ezra’s single off of his debut EP scheduled for April 2020.

Behind The Song • From Ezra Jordan

The central concept for CLIFFS came to me while I was standing on a massive cliff watching the sunset over the ocean in Thailand. It was a few days after breaking up with my then-girlfriend, which was what inspired most of what I wrote about on this EP.

I remember being so overwhelmed by the unbelievable beauty of what I was seeing up there that it actually gave me a little bit of hope that eventually, everything was going to be okay. However, my memory of that evening took on a different meeting when I met up with my ex 6 months later. Seeing her again changed my memory of that night to feeling like she was dangling me over the cliff and holding me hostage, instead of feeling like everything would get better from then on.

It was co-produced by Quinn Kiu, Matt Kahane, Elijah Woods, and myself. The recording experience was interesting because it was fragmented into a couple of different locations. The song was written and demoed out in Quinn’s bedroom studio with him, Matt and me. The song had largely taken shape, but I then decided to take it to Ottawa to record the vocals with Elijah Woods because I was such a huge fan of the way he produces and treats his vocals. From there, Elijah and I ended up changing up the form of the song a little bit and beefing up some elements, as well as giving some overall polish to make everything sound very powerful and refined.

I want people to relate to the hopelessness that you feel when you are stuck in that thought loop of missing someone that you can’t get out of your head.

I was trying to capture a mood that is both energetic and melancholy. Almost like nervous anxiety. I was trying to capture that weird feeling where you can’t let go of something, while simultaneously wanting to let go because you know it’s the right thing to do.
