“Somewhere I Know” is an introspective ballad about life after death. Marc Charav sings about a place that he dreams of in remembrance of someone. While the place itself isn’t specified in the song, the lyrics center around that feeling in a way people can relate to. He sings like he feels the distance between him and his grandparents growing further apart.

The song opens with conditional statements about wanting to show more, but would rather see them in a place where they’ll be at peace. For example, the first verse:

“If I could only tell

What I’ve been dreaming again

I sure know you’ve never seen (I’ll never get to talk about my dreams with you)

But I might show you how it’ll be.” (But you can see them from the other side)

Charav said he wrote “Somewhere I Know” sometime after losing his grandparents. “I had this dream one night about a beautiful place like heaven,” he said. “So the meaning of the song is sharing a place up there with someone we love who passed away and now lives in that beautiful place.”

The music sounds like a reinterpretation of “Somewhere Only We Know” by Keane. The production gives off the sentiment of sharing a special place with someone, even in their final moments. The buildup before the second chorus was worth it because the cello accompaniment towards the end brought Coldplay-coded emotions to the forefront.

Like Keane member Tim Rice-Oxley said, it’s not about a geographical location, but rather the feeling it brings and how it connects with people. “It's about being able to draw strength from a place or experience you've shared with someone,” he said on The Mirror. “I think it's an idea a lot of people can relate to."
