It can be difficult to find your way in life especially when you can’t find support in the ways that many people usually do. In “Skyward”, Zalmi expresses the difficulty of finding oneself in a world that isn’t so supportive. I love the song’s nuance and imagery. In each verse, he describes a moment when he’s been let down and reaches out to the universe for support. The wordplay is fantastic as well. The second verse describes the subject not learning how to dance and thus “I threw it all at the girl with no chance.” However, this can be interpreted as both dancing with someone that didn’t know how to dance or perhaps someone who couldn’t care for him/ support a relationship. This dual meaning can apply to many parts of the song. No matter who you are, you will find a piece of Skyward that resonates with you.

All of this fantastic storytelling is supported by the luscious strings and soaring quality of Zalmi’s voice. Zalmi’s melodies in the chorus sing out as if the the universe. He sings skyward looking for support without even saying so. I found myself joining him to sing out for all the world to hear and release any tension I was holding in. As Zalmi said, “If you feel like you didn't get the tools you needed from your parents, and you had to learn how to ’adult’ on your own, this song is for you.” I’d say even if you have support systems, I would make sure that you support yourself through self expression and singing “Skyward” with Zalmi would definitely help to do that!
