"Runaround" - Deer Fellow | Review

Something about this voice made me stop in my tracks.

"Runaround" is the perfect song to transition us into the fall. With stunning harmonies and a beautiful acoustic base, Deer Fellow really made a stunning piece with this track. Playful, layered guitars create a vibrant backdrop for the powerful yet nuanced vocals in “Runaround.” This song tackles the frustration of knowing what’s best for someone yet being unable to convince them. The subject is coming to terms with the fact that no matter what she says or how she says it, the truth will never get through. While her counterpart will continue on in blinded fantasy, the subject is rooted in reality, which often lacks happy endings.

Deer Fellow is an indie folk-pop duo with a “new wave soul twist.” Based out of Austin, bandmates Matt Salois (guitar, vocals) and Alyssa Kelly (violin, vocals, piano) met at an open mic and were quick to collaborate. Fast forward to present day and coupledom, the two have built a cross-genre sound that “pulls you in right away, stirring romance and broken hearts.”

The duo's vocal harmonies and unique guitar-violin blends have landed them features on KUTX 98.9 Radio, CBS Austin, and EASTside Magazine. Often compared to the likes of Andrew Bird and The Staves, Deer Fellow presents a coherent collection of authentic songwriting and soundscapes that “surround and warm the soul." From live showcases with Austin greats like Quiet Company to virtual festivals alongside such artists as Grammy winner John Paul White of The Civil Wars, their style and substance have garnered attention within the indie music industry.

Fans describe their live performance as an experience that “gives that warm tingly feeling, like taking a bath with a glass of champagne.” The group currently plays all around Austin and plans to go on tour after their upcoming EP release, Words Unsaid.

Lyrics if you want to sing along:

"Why do I bother trying? Your head is in the clouds

Despite the truth I am shouting you’re never coming down

We all see right through him. I don’t know why, I don’t know why you don’t

Keep giving me the runaround. Keep me at bay by never slowing down

You’re burying my words six feet underground

By the time they reach your ears they don’t make a sound

Happily ever after was always on your mind

A husband, kids, all that mattered, but this won’t heal with time

You pushed everyone else around you. Pushed us away for someone who shouldn’t stay

Keep giving me the runaround. Keep me at bay by never slowing down

You’re burying my words six feet underground

By the time they reach your ears they don’t make a sound

You’re living in a wonderland where everything goes as planned

I wish I could pretend our story has a happy end

Keep giving me the runaround. Keep me at bay by never slowing down

You’re burying my words six feet underground

By the time they reach your ears they don’t make a sound"
