There’s nothing worse than realizing that due to your personal growth, you are leaving others behind. Eden Rain beautifully captures this complicated feeling of dread, guilt and regret in their most recent single ‘Growing Pains.’ As Eden previously opened for one of my favorites, Lola Young, on tour, I knew I was going to love her work. She has this lovely cadence in it almost a drawl like she herself is pushing herself forward with trouble. My favorite songs are melancholy and difficult as they can be very therapeutic. ‘Growing Pains’ certainly is for me.
My favorite lines of Growing Pains are when Eden paints a lovely melancholy picture: “I used to know what you liked in your tea/ Your favorite number was three and you/ hated your dad/ He drank when he’s sad which was always/ I could’ve lived in your stories and I/ couldn’t dream that you would be someone I barely knew.” That last line really sticks with me as it alludes to the later discovery, “you cut me down just to grow.” That shift from at first being okay being the side character in another person’s life is a realization that you deserve someone that grows with you. Eden beautifully sets this up at the beginning discussing her parents and how they have grown together over the course of their relationship. It’s extremely impressive how so much can be said in such a short amount of time. This is not only due to the lyrics but the phenomenal production that carries it.
Eden Rain has a lot more coming: an EP and also her largest headline show to date at Oslo in Hackney on October 14th. However, I would grab your tickets fast as Eden has already sold out London Headline including Servant Jazz, Folklore, Lower Third and Moth Club. If you are looking for more to listen to, I would recommend Eden’s songs, “Who I've Touched' about letting others define you, and ' It's Always Been Like This' about honesty and rage. I can’t wait to see what’s next for Eden Rain!
