In “Good Song,” Ornate addresses what I think is the hardest part of a breakup, moving through the lasting reminders of a relationship, and, as a music lover, for me that is the hardest. What once was soothing music can be turned into a weapon when it reminds you of an ex. What’s perfect about Ornate’s depiction of this issue is he is both creating a song that may be difficult to listen to for someone that is missing someone but also cathartic. With lines like, “Are there any with words that just don't hurt?” and “The writers probably hate me/ Man, this joke might land/ And damn it worked,” Ornate really paints a visual and connects with listeners over this issue. It’s impressive to have such an original refreshing take on a topic that is so fundamental to many.
While the lyrics cut to the heart of the problem, the instrumentals are so soothing with cheery, plucked guitars and light sweet synth/harp like sounds. This is the perfect song for anyone having trouble with a breakup, looking to just vibe or needs a calming song to study or relax to. I particularly love the addition of horns at the end to really bring up the tone.
Thankfully it seems like there is more to come from Ornate as he has an upcoming record that is “the most honest” he’s ever been. He’s based out of Nashville so I would definitely look for any shows in that area from him and with previous features in Spotify’s editorial playlists Fresh Finds and Fresh Finds: Pop, it seems more hype is soon to come. I’ll be on the lookout for that upcoming record for sure.
