"Fake" by GRLwood | Review

GRLwood’s “Fake” is a roast of a song with the catchiest chill crisp melodies. The group began as Rej Forester’s solo project in 2016 before becoming a performing duo with Mia Morris as the drummer. They have created a community based in their hometown of Louisville, Kentucky. GRLwood is known for their energetic live performances so it’s no surprise to me that their recorded work captures that in its own way. The production is phenomenal. It is so dynamic despite the guitar loop for so much of it because of the pauses in productions, added vocals and the mix of fuzzy and clear elements.

On my first listen, I didn’t even register casually brutal lyrics as each audio element is so crisp it scratches the depth of my brain. The lyrics “I know you know that I know that I am in your head” does such a wonderful job of concisely describing the level of satisfaction and the emotional chaos of overthinking someone’s perception of you. It’s both satisfying to take them down in your head through perceived slights but also hides some of what could be sadness at not having a direct answer for what happened to someone you have feelings for until they were awful.

This is a growth anthem. GRLwood pushes past that hurt eager to push off from the previous slights. It’s a revenge song with a calm steadiness of growth. Definitely great for anyone that is ready to shed things that do not serve them anymore in this new year. It’s even better for anyone whose goal is to get off of socials; perhaps GRLwood singing “Get the fuck off instagram, goddamn” will make it stick.
